The Liard’s Arms – Matjiesfontein

This cozy little historic pub is quite the treat after a long day on the road.

The furniture and decor are straight out of the 19th century. The enormous cash register from the 1900’s is the first thing you notice upon entering, followed by the vintage piano which is still played by the barman on occasion.

The pub is well known for its fireplace during the winter months. The cozy pub combined with its fireplace is a real haven to cold travelers.

They offer a variety of pub lunches, snacks, and most local beers (bottled).

Right next door to the The Laird’s Arms is Lord Milner Hotel. This historic Victorian style hotel dates back from the 1890’s.

The hotel was named for Lord Alfred Milner, who was the governor of the Cape during the South African Anglo-Boer war. The hotel was completed in 1899 and still retains it historic charm.
