Jan Phillips Bergpas Bike Trip

This bike day trip is situated behind the “Afrikaanse Taal Monument” in Paarl along Paarl Mountain.  We included the Jan Phillips Bergpas in our scenic route through Durbanville and Paarl.

Jan Phillips Bergpas Trip Report:

We started our route as many others in Durbanville as we are blessed with so many nice gravel roads in this area.

In this route we feature Occultdale Rd as our first gravel stretch.  Occultdale Rd is very well maintained gravel road between Adderley Rd and the R302.

From there we took Silent Rd and Vryguns Rd to Windmeul. From Windmeul we rode on the Noord Agter Paarl Rd which converts into Paarl Main Rd.

Shortly thereafter we turned onto Jan Phillips Berpad.

Now first-off we need to mention that this road is technical.

The gravel road starts with a very steep incline. The road is also narrow with many ditches and potholes.

Lots of oncoming traffic is encountered and usually in the middle of the road as everyone is looking at the views and not the road. Therefore we advise caution to take it slow.

The gravel road curves around Paarl Mountain and is indeed an adventure and pleasure to ride. You will not mind taking it slow due to the stunning views.

There are many lookout points from where the spectacular views of Paarl can be enjoyed.

We exited Jan Phillips Bergpas on the other side back onto Paarl Main Rd.  From there we took a leisurely ride back to Durbanville via the scenic R44 and R312 tar roads.
